Experience
Sarah Mouton Dowdy’s animal health career began in 2016 when she worked as a content specialist fordvm360.com, a website that provides news, business guidance, and clinical information to veterinary professionals. In addition to pitching, writing, and editing content, Sarah worked with the content team to “package” online content for use in dvm360, Firstline, and Vetted magazines. This included folio creation, art direction, copyediting, copyfitting. While at dvm360, she also applied her teaching experience and classroom studies to redesigning the structure of continuing education lectures for veterinary professionals to make them more interactive and (ideally) more memorable and useful. This work earned her the honor of being chosen as a 2018 Folio Rising Star, which highlights some of the best and brightest up and comers in the media industry. After nearly 3 years, Sarah stepped back from full-time work but continued as a contributing writer for dvm360.com for 2 more years.
Prior to dvm360, Sarah worked as a content developer for Reilly Connect, a digital communications agency, writing and editing promotional copy for clients ranging from national brands to local nonprofits. While there, she also served as the social media manager for a lotion brand with over 100K Facebook followers.
A former grammar and writing teacher to lower school students, Sarah’s teaching experience also includes short stints teaching English in both France and South Korea.
Education
Sarah graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with bachelor’s degrees in English and Organizational Communication and a minor in Psychology. Her undergrad work also included a creative writing course at the University of Manchester in England. Sarah earned a master’s degree in health communication from Depaul University in Chicago where coursework included topics like health promotion, intercultural communication and health, research methods for healthcare professionals, health literacy, and medical education and training. While at DePaul, Sarah completed an internship with Northwestern Memorial Hospital in the Quality Strategies department where she wrote descriptions to accompany the quality measure results posted on the organization’s website.
