Many people select a name for their pet based on the animal's appearance, such as Zebra for an animal with lots of striped markings. Others choose a name that represents certain species traits or personality traits of the individual animal. Or maybe you want to keep things simple and just give your animal a name that starts with your favorite letter of the alphabet. Tips for Naming Your Exotic Pet

Don’t rush the naming process for your pet. Take all the time you need to settle on a name that will stick. Some exotic pets have rather short lifespans, such as certain small rodents or fish that only live a few years. But others, including tortoises and large parrots, can be a part of your family for decades. Granted not every animal will learn to respond to its name and thus probably won’t notice if you change the name midway through its life. But it still can be a hassle to change an animal’s name, especially if it’s written on vet records and other information. So it’s best to make sure you will be happy with your decision for all the years you will have this animal.

Moreover, avoid names that are a little risqué or otherwise offbeat. It might seem funny at the time. But if there’s ever a chance you’ll be embarrassed telling your friends and family the name or hearing it called in your veterinarian’s waiting room, it’s probably not the right name for your animal.

If you’re stuck on finding a suitable name, make a list of your pet’s physical characteristics, as well as its personality and species traits. Does it like to swim? Is it a good singer?
