Four robot vacuums on the floor for the pet hair vacuum test

The Spruce Pets / Henry Wortock

If you have a dog or cat that sheds, a robot vacuum devoted to collecting debris from flooring surfaces will enhance your quality of life by significantly reducing the amount of time and effort you put into vacuuming.

The best robot vacuum will have object avoidance programmed into its operating system. This will help keep it out of the path of humans and pets. The type of flooring in your home matters too—many robots are capable of gliding from hardwood floors to carpet, while some can mop your floors too.

After testing 31 robot vacuums in our New York City Lab and then sending each one to a real home with real pets for several months, our top choice–the one best suited for most pet owners–is the iRobot Roomba J7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum. It maps out a space, recognizing temporary obstacles—like your pet or an accident left behind by your pet–and then communicates with you on how best to proceed via the Roomba app on your mobile device.

What We Like
  • Easy to set up with the Roomba app and Wi-Fi connectivity

  • Automatic emptying when docked

  • Avoids obstacles, like power cords and pet waste, and sends photos of what it encounters

  • Edge brush is very effective with cleaning crevices upright vacuums can’t reach

  • Very quiet, you can easily have a conversation with the vacuum powered on

What We Don’t Like
  • Clearing the occasional tangle from the bin may be required

  • If you have a larger home the bin will fill up quickly

In a home with a dog and kitten, the Roomba J7+ picked up pet hair and cat litter that had been tracked more efficiently than we ever could. The Roomba J7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum from iRobot is a highly effective vacuum cleaner with several features–like an edge-sweeping brush for excavating pet hair within tight crevices–and enhancements–like the ability to communicate if an object on the floor is temporary or a new permanent fixture–that makes it our top choice for homes with pets.

The setup process is a breeze, arriving primarily intact with a docking station that will serve as its home base for self-emptying and charging. For proper use of this circular vacuum, the Roomba app must be installed on an iOS or Android device, and from there you help the Roomba J7+ connect to your Wi-Fi network and learn its way around the space it will be cleaning.

During its initial voyage, the iRobot Roomba J7+ maps out the terrain to learn where it should and should not venture, communicating what it encounters with you via photos on the app. When it spots an obstacle–like your dog taking a nap on the floor–the vacuum will send a photo of this (adorable) scene without approaching to wait for your instruction as to whether that is a temporary obstacle that will be removed later, or if that is a space that the vacuum should avoid moving forward. If it’s temporary, the vacuum will then remind itself to address the area in question at a later time.

For subsequent cleaning missions, the Roomba J7+ will retain the information you’ve fed to it for more streamlined ventures. While it’s not capable of climbing a staircase (nor are any robotic vacuums we’ve encountered), it can cross thresholds into other rooms with significantly more ease than other robot vacuum cleaners we tested.

The vacuum fully charges in two hours with a light notification indicating that it’s ready to go. It has a prolonged run time of 75 minutes and the ability to transition across flooring surfaces–hardwood, carpeting, tile, laminate–before returning to its docking station to self-empty all the pet hair and debris collected, recharging for the next programmable mission you send it on.

If you have a larger home the vacuum bin may need to be emptied more frequently, and on occasion manually clearing a tangled hair or particle that is stuck in the bin is likely to be needed. And on average the dustbin bag within the docking station, where the self-emptied debris is collected, will need to be emptied out and replaced every 60 days.

What We Like
  • Reliable object avoidance using laser-powered technology (LiDAR), even avoiding socks

  • Five-layer HEPA filtration system

  • Relatively quiet while operating

  • Very precise mapping of space

  • One-year warranty from the manufacturer

What We Don’t Like
  • The docking station is larger than other models we tested

运行时为90分钟,一个五层的高效filtration system capable of housing up to 2.5 liters of compressed dust, pet hair, and dander, the Samsung Jet Bot AI+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner is made to thoroughly pick up after pets in a home. While testing, this relatively quiet vacuum was able to navigate its way under sofas and chairs, and around objects like cables, power cords, and socks–which are typically problematic roadblocks that hinder a robot vacuum from completing its mission.

通过三星SmartThings应用,机器人vacuum will communicate needs through notifications, send images of obstacles it encounters, and even allow you to view a live stream video of the vacuum’s cleaning journey in your space. The Jet Bot AI+ uses laser-powered technology known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to autonomously transition across surfaces and adjust suction power while successfully avoiding individuals—like pets and children—and objects that cross its cleaning path, even in the dark. It’s comparable to the technology self-parking automobiles use to gauge distance and determine which objects to avoid.

The internal brush has two lines of defense to keep pet hair and other particles lurking on the floor from getting stuck–it’s made with anti-static fibers and there are self-cleaning extractors that grind up hair to prevent tangles. And the Jet bot AI+ comes with a docking station where the robot vacuum self-empties its dust bin into a larger sealed container. It also navigates its way back to its homebase for charging, but the dock, referred to as the cleaning station by Samsung, is larger than the others that made our list so it might be too overwhelming if you live in an apartment.

For safety, the sensors on the robot vacuum are very sensitive, but while testing in a home environment, a long strand of hair was often the culprit holding up the cleaning process. It was easy to remove, but something to keep in mind if you plan to run the vacuum cleaner while you are away from your home.

What We Like
  • Easily connects to Wi-Fi and can be controlled via Neato app

  • Avoids obstacles using laser-powered technology (LiDAR) which works in the dark

  • D-shape is capable of getting into corners

  • Replacement filters included

  • Does not take pictures, which some feel could be an invasion of privacy

What We Don’t Like
  • 我们不self-empty停靠站和铁吗lt the instructions for emptying the bin could be more detailed

  • Required up to three passes to fully clean a space

With the Neato D8 Intelligent Robot Vacuum you can define areas in a room that are off limits—like around your pet’s bowls to avoid spilling water. It’s equipped with a spiral combo brush that is suitable for use across hardwood, carpet, and tile, and a brush cleaning tool is also included to help the spiral combo brush maintain its efficiency.

The Wi-Fi-enabled Neato D8 is best controlled through the NeatoApp on a mobile device where cleanings can be scheduled and the overall maintenance needs of the vacuum can be monitored. There are two cleaning modes to choose from while the D-Shaped vacuum glides around furniture legs and gets into corners. We found the more powerful of the two, turbo, to be highly efficient but too loud to run in the same room while you are having a conversation. The quieter mode, eco, is less intrusive but several passes were often needed to clear the surface of pet hair.

Similar to theSamsung Jet Bot AI+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner, our choice for Best Splurge, the D8 uses LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to identify and navigate its way around obstacles. But unlike the other robot vacuum cleaners we recommend, the Neato D8 does not capture and send photos of what it encounters in your home–a feature that some think could be a potential invasion of privacy.

The affordably priced robot vacuum has a maximum runtime of 100 minutes and is capable of covering up to 750 square feet on a single charge. When the Neato D8 is running low on battery, it can navigate its way to the docking station, but it does not have the capability of self-emptying. The internal dustbin is slightly larger (0.7 liters) than other robotic vacuums but does require manual emptying. The vacuum is also fitted with an internal filter and comes with two replacements.

What We Like
  • Very quiet while cleaning

  • Combines vacuuming and mopping in one passage

  • Ability to designate routines and off-limit areas via app

  • Voice command capable

  • Laser-powered technology to map out space and avoid obstacles

What We Don’t Like
  • Several passes required to fully pick up kibble

  • Docking station does not self-empty dustbin

The RoboVac X8 Hybrid has a dustbin to collect debris, but unlike the other robot vacuum cleaners on our list, this one also has a water bin to facilitate mopping for a deeper clean. “When dealing with pet hair there tends to be a lot of static, so a little bit of water can go a long way when you're trying to get pet hair off surfaces,” Jessica Ek from The American Cleaning Insitute told The Spruce Pets.

Wi-Fi-connected机器人真空后最初的jaunt around your space to map out the area, you can use the Eufy app to dictate where the RoboVac X8 Hybrid should venture and which zones are off-limits. While testing, we found the combination cleaner highly effective for tidying up high-trafficked rooms, like an entryway and the kitchen where dirt, dust, and pet hair tend to collect. The Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid has two turbines that circulate in opposition to attract and absorb pet hair along with a rolling brush to get in between tiles and cracks to lift and clean dirt.

The RoboVac X8 uses a type of laser-powered technology referred to as SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) to safely operate autonomously in a home steering itself clear of pets and obstacles. While testing the RoboVac X8 Hybrid easily maneuvered across various flooring types picking up debris, but requiring more than one pass for larger bits like kibble.

For maintenance, the dustbin is easy to open and comes with a small brush to thoroughly clear out particles and hair–the small bits that tend to jam up vacuums. From the docking station, the hybrid robot vacuum requires up to five hours for a full recharge, which is a significant duration of time, but it has a runtime of 180 minutes and the device continuously returns to the docking station when not in use so it can be ready to go when needed.

Final Verdict

Our top choice is theiRobot Roomba J7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuumwhich effectively cleans and seamlessly transitions across flooring surfaces, avoiding obstacles and automatically returning to its docking station for hands-off maintenance. If you are looking for a reliable but more affordable option, the Neato D8 Intelligent Robot Vacuum is a reliable app-controlled vacuum that can be programmed to clean select areas of your home, but it doesn’t self-empty the dustbin when it needs to recharge.

The majority of households will need another style of vacuum for thorough pet hair maintenance (upright, stick, handheld) because a robot vacuum cannot be used on stairs or upholstery. You canread more about our top-tested vacuums for pet hair here.

How We Tested

Hundreds of hours of first-hand testing–while being as hands-off as possible with robot vacuums–have informed our top selections.

To start, we tested a variety of robot vacuums inThe Labwhere we replicated common household flooring surfaces and sprinkled specific amounts of pet kibble or cereal and tufts of pet hair on each to challenge claims made by manufacturers. Each robot vacuum was set up and taken through several testing trials to rate and compare features and functionality.

We evaluated our findings across multiple categories, including effectiveness, ability to avoid objects, ease of emptying, noise level, ease of setup, and overall value. We then narrowed down our top performers and sent each robot vacuum to at least one real home with real pets.

For up to six months with regular check-ins, each tester was required to document and capture the performance of the robot vacuum in their home. They took note of how often they needed to maintain the docking station, how easy it was to keep the robot vacuum, running efficiently, whether the performance declined as time passed, and if they found the robot vacuum to be beneficial.

Equipped with this information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the right robot vacuum for cleaning up pet hair in your home.

What to Look for in a Robot Vacuum for Pet Hair

Object Avoidance

For use with a pet, having technology that enables the robot vacuum to recognize objects and obstacles is essential. This will help keep your furry friend safely out of the way. But the technology is not univeral across all robot vacuum cleaners, and based on our testing, some manufacturers are more reliable than others.

Docking Station

A docking station keeps the robot vacuum charged so it’s ready to go next time you need it. And some, like two of the vacuums on our list, theiRobot Roomba J7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuumand theSamsung Jet Bot AI+ Robot Vacuum Cleanerallow the robot vacuum to self-empty the internal dust bin. This also keeps the vacuum running smoothing for a longer period of time.

Depending on the robot vacuum and its coordinated docking station, the collection space within the dock can be bagless or have a bag. If it has the bag, then it is less likely that any of the debris collected will spill, but you’ll have to purchase replacement bags. The Rooba J7+, our choice for Best Overall, requires replacement bags for its docking station. And it can also be purchased without the self-emptying docking station for a slightly lower price–Roomba J(without the plus sign) is capable of avoiding your pet, but it’s not as conveniently sufficient.

FAQ
  • Are robot vacuums safe to use around pets?

Yes, but you should always supervise your pet when introducing a new vacuum to your space. Most dogs tend to avoid vacuums, but some might try to play with the vacuum which could lead to damage. All of our selections are designed to avoid objects, including humans and pets, but to be on the safe side we recommend running the vacuum while you and your pet are in another room or outside. If you have a cat, they can alwaysseek higher ground in a cat tree.

  • How frequently should a robot vacuum be used?

For maintenance of pet hair and dander, we generally recommend vacuuming flooring and upholstery once a week, but the advantage of having a robot vacuum is that it does most of the floor cleaning without you. You can let the robot vacuum clean up your flooring surfaces every day as long as you leave time for it to charge.
