Bone broth can make food more appealing for the fussiest feline eaters, while improving your cat's hydration—useful for many cats, especially those who primarily eat dry food. Bone broth can be poured or sprinkled over your cat’s wet or dry food, added to their water, or even given on its own.

It should be noted that cats likely don't need nutritional supplementation from bone broth. If your cat is fed food certified by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), than their diet is already balanced to meet their nutritional needs.

While researching the best bone broths, we spoke withDr. Gina Rendon, Medical Director of Williamsburg Veterinary Clinic in New York City, who told us that there isn't yet strong research for specific health benefits cats get from bone broth. While the collagen found in bone broth has demonstrated benefits for human skin and joint health, similar benefits have not yet been demonstrated for cats.

Therefore bone broth for cats is best thought of as a treat or flavorful food topper, rather than a health tonic.

We researched the best bone broths for cats based on ingredients, protein source, product life expectancy, and appropriateness for felines. Our favorite bone broth for cats is Left Coast Performance Grass-fed Beef Bone Broth because it is a single ingredient product made directly from beef bone broth, is human-grade, and comes in a convenient, shelf-stable powder form.

猫主人谁不喂任何东西他们也t eat themselves will be happy to know that Left Coast Performance Grass-fed Beef Bone Broth sells the exact same product for humans but with different packaging. Most bone broth manufactured for humans isn’t suitable for cats because of the added spices and salt, but this single-ingredient beef bone broth doesn’t have any added yeast, salt, flavoring, or fillers.

Left Coast Performance Grass-fed Beef Bone broth is made from the bones of grass-fed cattle in Sweden. It has been slow-cooked and simmered for hours to extract nutrients. It is a minimum 95 percent of crude protein and contains natural type I and III collagen that is rich in amino acids, including arginine, an essential amino acid for cats.

It doesn't have to be refrigerated before or after opening, but should be stored in a dark, cool place for maximum shelf life. It’s suitable for all life stages and can be sprinkled on top of your cat’s food or mixed with warm water. Each 8-ounce tub has approximately 90 servings’ worth of powdered bone broth (based on serving size for a 25-pound or less dog). Unfortunately, there isn’t a serving size guide for cats, just dogs, which makes it difficult to know the best serving size for your cat.

Native Pet makes two flavors of bone broth for your cat, beef and chicken. Both are made with minimal ingredients, but we’re partial to the beef version because it only has two ingredients and the first is beef bone broth. The second ingredient is sunflower lecithin, which functions as a cat-safe thickener and can even help shine up your kitty’s coat. Sunflower lecithin is often used as support for neurological disorders in cats thanks to its role in neutral transmission. We also like that this bone broth was researched and formulated by vets. Each 4.75-ounce resealable can has around 50 or more servings, depending on the size of your cat, and each serving contains at least a 90 percent crude protein.

Unlike liquid bone broth that will spoil in the refrigerator about a week after opening, we like that the powder form can be stored on the shelf for up to a year after opening. Give it to your cat by either sprinkling it on top of their regular food, mixed into their water, or mixed with warm water for a brothy treat. Although the current packaging doesn’t mention this product is made for cats, we called the company and got confirmation that both flavors of bone broth powder are safe for cats (and were told there is a cat-inclusive label redesign in the making).

This 12-pack of single-serve powdered bone broth is a convenient way to add a little oomph to your cat’s current diet or entice them to drink more water. Each sachet contains a shelf-stable powdered serving of beef bone broth that doesn’t need refrigeration. About the size of a credit card, the thin packets are perfect for travel since they can easily slip into the pocket of your jeans, purse, or cat carrier. These are most ideal for cat parents who don’t expect to use bone broth daily or who plan to be on-the-go. Packets can be opened and sprinkled on top of your cat’s food or mixed into their water as needed.

The Honest Kitchen Daily Boost Instant Beef Bone Broth is made with human-grade standards, in a human food facility, and contains no preservatives, fillers, or GMO ingredients. We like that dehydrated beef broth and beef are the first two ingredients, but find it curious that they don't specify if it is grass-fed beef, which is considered superior. It also contains dehydrated pumpkin (for digestive support), dried parsley, and dehydrated turmeric (an anti-inflammatory), which may be a hit or miss with some pet parents. While the single-serve packets are convenient, there is likely more than one serving per packet and the exact amount to give your cat can be hard to figure out, especially if it’s on the smaller side.

  • All-fish alternative to usual bone broth

  • Easy-close twist lid keeps it fresh

  • High in moisture

What We Don't Like
  • Addition of guar gum

  • No serving size guide

Fish bone broth is a rare find making these Applaws Limited-ingredient pouches of fish broth and tuna a particular treat. This is a great bone broth alternative for cats that have intolerances or allergies to common land-based proteins, or picky eaters on prescription diets. We love that each 3-ounce pouch contains just four ingredients—fish bone broth, tuna filet pieces, and tilapia (used for extra collagen), and guar gum, a natural fiber. When ingested in large quantities, guar gum may cause gas or diarrhea in cats. Unfortunately, this means the lack of a serving size guide may cause some anxiety for pet parents (how much is too much?).

Still, this broth uses no artificial ingredients, colors, or preservatives, and the pouch has a resealable spout to help preserve the package’s freshness over multiple uses. It’s meant to be served at room temperature as a meal compliment poured over dry or wet food. Leftovers need to be refrigerated and used within five days, so this is most economical if you’re planning to add-in the broth on a regular basis.

What We Like
  • Limited ingredient with single protein source

  • Resealable twist top

  • Feeding instructions start at 3 pounds

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

The Primalvore Farm-raised Duck bone broth is great for all cat life stages, but we like it for kittens because it is made from limited ingredients and has a feeding guide for cats weighing as little as three pounds. Food intolerances and allergies can appear at any age, but can be a lot easier to identify if you’re feeding your kitten foods with limited ingredients. Primalvore Farm-raised Duck Bone Broth is made from a single protein source of slow-roasted duck bones, plus added collagen peptides and turmeric, an anti-inflammatory. While we prefer zero extra ingredients, we really like that this broth uses duck, which cats tend to tolerate a lot more than chicken or beef.

Unopen, this pouch can last up to 18 months on the shelf, but once you pop the cap, you’ll need to store it in the refrigerator and then use it all (or toss the leftovers) after a maximum of 10 days. If you choose to freeze it after opening, it’ll stay good for up to a year.

  • Uses humanely-farmed chicken

  • No GMO ingredients

  • No hormones, steroids, or antibiotics

What We Don't Like
  • Lots of extra ingredients like cinnamon

  • Not suitable for cats under one-year old

Cats can be finicky eaters, especially as they age. Open Farm Harvest Chicken Bone Broth is our choice for enticing cats that seem to have lost their appetite. This bone broth is made from simmering humanely-raised chicken bones for 10 hours to extract nutrient-rich collagen and savory chicken flavor. We love that this broth remains affordable making it a no-brainer for anyone on a budget or who plans to use this appetite enhancer daily. We also like that you won’t find any GMO ingredients or any hormones, antibiotics, or steroids.

We’re less excited that the broth contains added carrots, parsley, turmeric, and cinnamon, but at least most have a noted functional purpose like added flavor, anti-inflammatory properties, and digestive aid. However, we’ve been at that desperate point where we just want our furry friend to eat—or drink—without protest, and this broth almost always gets the job done.

What to Look for in Bone Broth for Cats

Ingredients

When it comes to bone broth, fewer ingredients are best. Single-ingredient products that list bone broth as their only ingredient, likeLeft Coast Performance’s Grass-fed Beef Bone Broth, should be at the top of your list, followed by products that list minimal additional ingredients. Bones, water, or bone broth should always be prioritized. Avoid products that include any ingredients (like black pepper, lemon juice, or onion) that can be toxic to cats, and look for bone broths that don’t use GMO ingredients, antibiotics, steroids, or hormones.

Life stage

While bone broth is not a necessary supplement for cats who are on foods certified by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the age of your cat should be taken into consideration when buying bone broth. Be sure to pick a bone broth that states it is suitable for all life stages, likePrimalvore Farm-raised Duck Bone Broth,或者适合你的特定的人生阶段ur cat. This is particularly important for young kittens and senior cats.

Product life expectancy

Choose a bone broth with the best life expectancy for your needs. If you plan on adding-in bone broth to each meal or daily, you likely won’t need a product with a long shelf life even after opening. For example,Native Pet Beef Bone Broth Powder可用于打开后一年即使它”s not refrigerated. Powdered bone broth will always have a much longer life expectancy (one year-plus) than liquid bone broth (7-10 days, opened and refrigerated).

Nutritional information

Again, although bone broth isn’t used for supplementing your cat’s diet—a properly balanced diet will not need supplementation—you’ll still want to check the bone broth to see how many calories it will add to your cat’s overall daily intake. Dr. Rendon advises not to feed more than 10 percent of your cat’s daily calories via bone broth. If you’re planning on adding bone broth to daily meals, consider a low-calorie bone broth likeOpen Farms Harvest Chicken Bone Brothwhich only has 2.2 kcal ME per tablespoon.

FAQ
  • Is bone broth good for cats?

Yes! True bone broth is good for cats because it contains amino acids, collagen, and protein. Some owners use bone broth as a way to make their cat’s food for enticing for a picky eater or to increase their cat’s water intake.

  • How much bone broth should I give my cat?

The amount of bone broth you should give your cat will vary depending on the exact brand, protein type, and secondary ingredients in the broth, like vegetables or spices. Typically, the suggested serving size is around ½ tablespoon of broth per 25 pounds (many bone broth feeding guides are listed for dogs).

  • Is bone broth good for cats with urinary problems?

Bone broth can be helpful for cats with urinary and kidney problems since it often helps to increase a cat’s intake of water. Keeping a cat hydrated can be a challenge, and even more so if your cat has urinary or kidney issues.

  • Can I add broth to my cat's water?

Adding liquid or powdered bone broth to your cat’s water can be a convenient way to make drinking water more appetizing for them. Just remember that water with added bone broth shouldn’t sit out for very long because it will spoil faster than plain water. For this reason, it’s best to serve up your bone broth water in smaller dishes and in smaller amounts.
